| Water ... I am earth But I’ve always felt more water Perhaps because I’ve always held her cupped in my shallow seas Absorbed her through my limestone pores Trickle-dripped her from my cavern stalactites Gulped her down my cenotes Sat stagnant under her ponds until my skin wrinkled and split Stored her in my aquifers Could not keep her in my core volcanoes Self-erupted steam and liquid rock Spurted her nasty from my geysers Opened my artesian mouth to let her say what? Surged water silk curtains, water white chiffon veils Over cliffs where my hard shock failed Leaked her from high-altitude springs Runnelling down the alluvials in salt-earth streams Waved when she evaporated in my dehydrated deserts So little water— Arroyo puddle Rio Grande drip drop dribble Missing her when the muds cracked When the sands blew and eroded strange mountain paths Imagining her when the snows flew and filled every crevasse Flinching when she chipped at my icecaps Got lost in her fogs vapors mists dews Couldn’t stand her humid cling to my forests and coastal plains Couldn’t see through her heavy night rains Scarred by her sleet and hailstorms Hurt by her hurricane fits Wrung by her strongwall tsunami tantrums So so so much water— Dirty and pure so difficult to see How she floods my silt and sludge around Deposits bits of me in her sedimental riverbanks Always trying to come between me and Air She is the clouds up there Hiding the moon Warning Only a matter of hydro times/tides Until I’m wholly drowned again A global ocean |
